10 Ways to Protect the Environment
When it comes to the environment, we are living in increasingly dangerous and unpredictable times. Major catastrophes have been predicted by numerous scientists, and some even say that civilization is on the brink of collapse.
We don’t have to just sit back and accept it. In fact, we mustn’t. Little changes in your lifestyle can add up to a huge difference when part of a collective effort. To help get you started, here are 10 ways to protect the environment.
1. Walk or Ride a Bike
It is so easy to just jump into a car to complete simple errands and drive to your desired destination, but is it always necessary?
Vehicular transportation is one of the highest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and this is something to be mindful of before driving any journey that could otherwise be taken within a reasonable walking or biking distance. Not only can you help protect the planet with this simple change, but you can also do wonders for your body by treating it as a workout and burning any extra calories.
Of course, this is unrealistic and/or impossible for some scenarios, but most people should be able to cut down their miles in the car by replacing some short distance drives with a simple walk or bike ride.
2. Buy Local
Buying local groceries and shopping items is not only a great way to contribute to your community, but it also vastly reduces the miles upon miles that a product has travelled to be in your hands.
Eating local produce is also a great way to get to know the lands around you and have a more personal connection with your food. When a particular fruit or vegetable is not in season, you could try something else local as opposed to buying the same product from a far away nation.
Of course, this doesn’t have to be for every single meal that you consume, but it is a certainly a philosophy that you can take with you into a large portion of your meals.
3. No More Paper Receipts
When E-Billing is provided as an option for receipts of purchase, bank statements and other important documents, be sure to use this facility. It can save you time and also save an awful lot of trees.
It is not necessary to have everything in paper format and, oftentimes, things can be much easier to organise in digital form.
This is an obvious way to protect the environment, but one which can never be emphasised enough.
Depending on where you live, different localities have different guidelines and rules for what can and cannot be recycled. One of the ways to protect the environment is to make it a duty to learn these rules in order to recycle effectively and efficiently. Once you know the rules, you can also offer a helping hand to others in your circle who are unclear on the recycling guidelines.
Electronic waste is becoming a huge problem throughout the world and is largely borne out of people’s desire to upgrade to the latest versions of phones and other electronic gadgets that they have.
Old electronics can be harmful and must be disposed of correctly by checking your local guidelines. Alternatively, you could ask yourself whether you really need to upgrade your electronic device, or whether the urge will pass after a certain amount of consideration.

Perhaps an obvious way to protect the environment, but one that everybody is capable of doing to a certain degree.
There are numerous ways in which you can reduce your consumption and impact on the planet, from buying second-hand clothes, using solar power and clean energy in your homes, and prioritizing the use of recycled materials.
7. Reduce Meat Consumption
The livestock production industry is a leading contributor to biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions. It also carries other ethical and health related concerns, such as poor animal welfare conditions and links to diabetes, cancer, and hypertension.
You don’t have to become a vegan or vegetarian to fulfil this requirement, but you could start incorporating meatless days into your diet, such as trialling a no meat routine on alternate days.
8. Unplug Unused Electronics
This may seem obvious, but if you were to survey your house right now to see what electronics are plugged in but not in use, you may be surprised.
It is rational to think that when a device is not in use, it is not using electricity, but this is not always the case. A significant amount of energy is wasted every day from electrical appliances that are switched off and one of the ways to protect the environment is to have a quick daily routine check to see if there is any unnecessary energy consumption in your space. This could also save you a lot of money.
There are plenty of items that can be reused to make practical and useful additions to your household. If you’ve bought food that comes in a glass jar, try using this for storing other food instead of using plastic food bags that are contributing to the contamination of our oceans.
You could also donate any old items to a local charity outlet in the hope that someone else can reuse it. The opportunities for reuse are plentiful, and consideration should be placed on this before throwing items away as your first point of call.
10. Use Public Transport
For the same reasons outlined in the first point, using public transport is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and be more environmentally friendly.
This could also save you a fair amount of money, with public transport often putting a smaller dent in people’s wallets than cars and other solo automobiles.
Another factor you may benefit from is less road-related stress, as you can allow your brain to take a more relaxed role as a passenger, rather than getting caught in endless traffic with other frustrated drivers.
If public transport is limited in your area, you could also look for a local carpool service that operates near you.
